Goldberg: Observations
All subjects preferred having named variations.
- Names seemed to provide useful hints as to what to expect.
- Names provided an easy way to remember what was what.
- Without names, subjects almost always listened to all variations
straight through in order; with names, subjects were
more likely to go immediately to potentially interesting
variations and, sometimes, not even listen to everything.
- Subject 3 mentioned, however, that he liked a preliminary
exploratory phase without names that allowed him to
blindly explore the space in a relatively undirected manner.
Conclusion: Names should be provided. They
should be meaningful (descriptive of the operations performed)
if possible. Turning off naming could be an option.
